Why Your Headshot Eyes Look Flat (And the Pro Fix No One Talks About)

Ever get a photo back and think, “That’s me, but why do my eyes look so dead?”

It’s not you. It’s the lighting. Specifically, one tiny detail: catchlights.

In my 10+ years directing headshots for Scottsdale executives and leaders, I’ve seen how this one element separates a forgettable snapshot from a LinkedIn profile that commands attention. Let me break it down. No jargon, just results.

What Catchlights Actually Are

Catchlights are the small glints of light that show up in the eyes. They look like a spark or highlight reflecting off the iris.

They’re not edited in later (at least not by pros). They’re created by positioning you so a light source bounces right into your gaze. Without them, eyes can appear dark, hollow, or lifeless, even if you’re smiling. With them? Your face pops with energy and depth.

Think of it like this: eyes are the first thing people scan in a headshot. Catchlights make them feel alive and engaging. They pull viewers in subconsciously.

Why Catchlights Make or Break Executive Headshots

In headshots, it’s all about trust and presence. Dull eyes scream “outdated” or “unapproachable.” Catchlights flip that. They add dimension, making your expression read as confident and present.

For C-suite pros, speakers, or anyone building a personal brand, this matters. A strong catchlight subtly signals “high-quality production.” It boosts your perceived authority before anyone reads your bio.

Miss them, and even perfect posing falls flat. I’ve coached hundreds of clients here in Scottsdale: tweak the light for catchlights, and their feedback shifts from “nice photo” to “this feels like me and better.”

Creating Catchlights Indoors: Studio and Office Secrets

Indoors, control is king. Here’s how I dial them in every session.

Position you at a 30-45 degree angle toward your main light source. Never straight-on, or you’ll squint. That angle catches the reflection perfectly in the upper part of the eye (around 10 or 2 o’clock position). It mimics natural overhead light.

  • Studio setup: Large softbox or umbrella light positioned slightly above and to your side, 3-5 feet away. The closer it is, the bigger and brighter the catchlight. Ideal for that “lit from within” executive glow.
  • Office shoots: Use a nearby window as your key light. Face it indirectly. The sky or room brightness reflects in without harsh shadows. If it’s dim, a quick bounce from a white board or reflector fills the eyes.

Pro tip: Always check the eyes in your camera’s LCD zoomed in. Adjust chin up/down by a centimeter if needed. Takes 10 seconds, transforms the shot.

Creating Catchlights Outdoors: Natural Light Hacks

Outdoor headshots feel fresh, but direct sun kills eyes. Solution? Harness the sky smartly.

Find “open shade.” Use under a building eave, tree canopy edge, or north-facing wall. Face toward the brightest sky patch (not the sun). That huge light source creates soft, even reflections in both eyes.

  • Bright day: Open shade plus subtle fill from a 5-in-1 reflector angled low (silver side up) for punchier sparks without overkill.
  • Golden hour: Low sun behind you, but turn your head slightly toward open sky for balanced glints.

Avoid full sun overhead. Eyes go shadowy. Outdoors, catchlights prove your photographer knows light, not just location.

Proof: Headshot Before and After Catchlights

See the difference yourself. Same client, same expression. One with catchlights, one without (intentionally dulled for demo).

Left: Eyes feel recessed and tired. The face reads competent but distant. No “spark” to connect.

Right: Boom. Catchlights add life, depth, and that subtle 3D pop. Suddenly, it’s not just a photo. It’s you, ready to lead.

This is what I fine-tune in every session at Duane Furlong Studios.
